This all happened many years ago, wow! people still talking about the incedent!
I recall that the governing body (I think it was Rico Anthes) was warned that the lone fire engine should be placed on the finish line and not the start but they didn't want to know. Hockenheim was virtually a virgin to drag racing back then, and had no real safety knowledge. There again you don't need to be a nobel prize winner to work out that a fire engine takes 10 time longer to cover an 1/8th mile let alone the 1/2 mile or so there after till he came to a stop.

Was talking to his dad back in the UK about 5 years ago when I last saw him at a wedding, his first son died just before that from some kind of desease, he was wheel chair bound. Must have been more than devistating loosing your second son too.
